All Hallows
Dead Pianos were a four piece Goth band from Diss in South Norfolk, UK. They appear to have been influenced by bands such as the Cure. This seems to have been their one and only release and I am not finding out much more about them other than the comment on the YouTube site from which this video came from which seems to indicate that several members of the band were in a local band prior to this called 'The Stand' and possibly that Gary Butcher was also in an early 80's power pop band called Tranzista who released a 7" single 'Better Beware' all the way back in 1980 on the 'Land Speed Records' Label.Β
You can catch the Dead Pianos B Side 'Motionless' at the youtube link.
The band were:
- Gary Butcher - Guitar/Lead Vocals
- Andrew Flintham - Lead Guitar
- Mathew Seaman - Drums
- Paul Wright - Bass Guitar/Vocals
This song 'All Hallows' was recorded at Spaceward Studios towards the end of November '86 and self produced and released on their own 'Dead Pianos' record label in 1987 as DEA1.
The studio itself was started in 1972 by Mike Kemp and Gary Lucas, originally in college rooms and later moving to a terraced house in Cambridge and finally in 1981 settling in Streatham. Have a look at the link above to see some of the other bands that used it and about the recording studio's history. Many, many artists used the studio over the years including Bauhaus recording 'Dark Entries', Dif Juz with the 'Huremics E.P.' and Gary Numan recorded the album 'Tubeway Army' there in 1978.
Anyhoo... to finish this post in true goth stylee and as Halloween is almost upon us, here are those legends The Birthday Party doing that 'goth' thing even before the term had officially been coined! with their song released on the 4AD Label way back in 1981, go ahead boys, it's time to...
