Ambient Light & Bright New Year

So, on a slightly soggy day recently (and my, haven't there been a lot of wet and soggy days in the UK recently! And I suspect colder ones are to follow๐Ÿ™„) we popped up town on a bit of a whim to be honest, the missus had seen an immersive art experience called 'Delight' which explores South Korea in history and culture located around near Clink Street on Bankside around by other major attractions such as The Golden Hinde, The Tate Modern and The Globe Theatre. We hustled from London Bridge down the steps by Southwark Cathedral and wound around Borough Market which, even for a week day was busy (but nowhere near as bad as it is on a weekend!).

We hit the venue which is right next to Clink Prison Museum (another place well worth a visit if you get a chance).

When we got inside the dark building we were greeted by a guy who explained the exhibition and things to look out for. He originally came from Seoul and so his knowledge of life there was most helpful and it made South Korea sound like such a wonderful place in terms of even basics like free WiFi everywhere, a transport system that is cheap and effective and a health care system that makes ours look quite poor in comparison.ย

Exhibition Of Light

The exhibition was a beautiful light filled experience starting in a mirror filled room full of lights hanging with calming music, the lights all started off white and then after waiting eventually all slowly changed to green, red and blue representing the times of the day from sunrise to sunset.

All the rooms contained wonderful moving images from pictures of Korean street signs, computer imagery, Korean Gods and mythical images to the picture of the moon rising and the sounds of the waves crashing against the shore, all very relaxing.

It was a nice experience taking I guess as long as you wanted to immerse yourself in it and studying the imagery, media and descriptive cards to indicate the media's relevance, it was nice to get out of the gloom of poor and grey weather into a light filled world of escapism for an hour or so.

And Relaxxx...

Musically the trip inspired me to post something more ambient that I felt fitted in especially in the title of the album Carousel and even more especially the track 'Delight' which is featured in the link below to the album, it is at about 6 minutes and 25 seconds

Just sometimes it is nice to be washed away with sound as well as imagery and here are some examples of what I like to 'wash over me and immerse myself in'. Peaceful, ethereal and calming...

ย
The whole album is wonderfully peaceful. The full album is at this link: Robin Guthrie, Carousel.
ย
Have a listen to the whole album, it has hints of his work with The Cocteau Twins (almost expecting Elizabeth Frazer's voice to pop out!) as well as his association with Harold Budd.
ย
The Track Listing is:
  • Some Sort Of Paradise
  • Sparkle
  • Delight
  • Close My Eyes And Burn
  • Search Among The Flowers
  • Mission Dolores
  • Autochromes
  • The Girl With The Little Wings
  • Waiting By The Carousel
  • Little Big Fish

You can catch his work with the late Harold Budd here:

The above was used in the soundtrack for the 2005 film 'Mysterious Skin'.

And L' adventure From the album 'Bordeaux'...

All kind of 'Brain Candy' to wash over you and give you peace, certainly in that 'Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul' that is the Winter. This particular drop of beautifulness was released in 2011 on the U.S. Darla Label

ย

The Cocteau Twins and Harold Budd joined forces in 1986 for the album The Moon and The Melodies. Catch the very beautiful Sea, Swallow Me below:

Musical Memories

ย
The album was released on the Independent 4AD Record Label in November '86 and used each of the individuals involved rather than the name 'Cocteau Twins'.ย
ย
I seem to remember first hearing 'Pearly Dewdrops' Drops' on the John Peel show on Radio 1 back in the day and my wife remembers hearing 'Peppermint Pig' either way we are both quite big fans. Have loved their music from initially hearing it, although not as 'rock' style as my usual taste I love the vocals by Liz Frazer. Some of their earlier material wasn't quite so ambient, in fact I am surprised it took me so long to 'cotton on' to them as they were on the same brilliant label as Goth Legends Bauhaus i.e. 4AD Records. Nonetheless my wife and I have many of their albums. It is always nice for me to revisit some sounds I haven't heard for a while and also to usher in the New Year to also revisit a great Independent Record Label again.
ย
If you like your sounds a little bit 4AD you can catch more posts of some of the other bands on the label at the 4AD Records tag link and also the Featured Post 'Flowers Of The Sea' which covers another great 4AD band Dead Can Dance at the link.
