Hazy Shade Of Winter ๐Ÿ‚

Recently we took a little trip up town hitting the 78 bus from Shoreditch to Nunhead, I have to admit the name doesn't sound that glamorous but it is believed to be named after a local tavern in the area and is said to refer to the beheading of a Nun during the dissolution of the Monasteries, the Nun's head being placed on a spike in the nearby green, however some of this may just be legend...

Look Around...

Anyway we decided to take a look as despite there not actually being that much in Nunhead (almost having a village type vibe about it), it does have a cemetery which is ranked as a London must see. I know seems a little odd, but I do love a good gothic style cemetery as per my previous post A Dreaded Sunny Day โ˜€๏ธ.

Leaves Are Brown

We headed from the bus stop at the end of line and navigated our way along to Nunhead station, dropping in to the beautiful little independent garden centre, the plants and smells were lovely, we wandered up skirting the edges of the cemetery and eventually hit the main gate...

Wow! it is really quite impressive, in the distance a beautiful gothic style chapel and some of the mausoleums and grand grave stones are just amazing, some wonderful old grave stones hidden down little side tracks telling stories of bravery, service and also sadness. Many of the stones there are now covered in moss and hidden, but they represent some of the young men and women who fought in both world wars either on land sea or air, and some so young to give their lives up, it really makes you think back to when you would have been their ages and as to whether you might have given all in that sacrifice to protect the ones you love.

Thought provoking and peaceful. We decided to walk from Nunhead back into the hub bub of Peckham Rye passing by some cool art work enroute. Peckham is without a doubt 'busy' on a Saturday afternoon, there are so many places along the town to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish and is heaving with people buying and 'haggling' for the best price. The little calm oasis sits along a row of shops away from the station and it is called 'Zapoi', check it out! It is a funky little bar serving some delicious cocktails in some vibey eclectic surroundings, the music is good and the owners/staff are more than helpful. We eventually called it a day and as it was now getting dark we jumped the bus back over Tower Bridge (lit up beautifully) and on towards home.

And The Sky Is A Hazy Shade Of Winter

The journey through the place was quite calm and serene, the song continuously running through my head (maybe the grey overcast autumnal weather and the colour of the leaves lying strewn everywhere was this little ditty, 'Hazy Shade Of Winter' which was originally recorded way back in 1966 by Simon & Garfunkel, their original version at the link here and then resurrected in 1987 by (I know, a mainstream artist!), The Bangles which I brought at the time and still have. I have to admit The Bangles version of it seriously kicked some ass! It has a great and almost immediate hooky riff, plus the huge punchy drums and followed by that wonderful deep bass line that just does that whole bass down step through it brilliantly. Hats off to them, they did the song some proper justice and it was used for the 1987 film 'Less Than Zero' released in that same year.

Interestingly enough they didn't just hook up to a major label when they first formed in 1981, they were on the independent 'Faulty Products' record label set up by Miles Copeland which was also part of I.R.S. Records. This track 'I'm In Line' comes from their E.P. entitled simply just 'Bangles' back in 1982 and does have that kind of 'Garage Rock/Pop Rock' feel to it.

The track 'Hazy Shade Of Winter' was also more recently recorded again by Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance at the link here, whichever artist has done this track I love all of them!
