The Silent Scream
I'm Not Confused?
The Silent Scream. not to be confused with several other bands of the same name e.g. a Death Metal/Thrash band from the U.S. and a Post Punk band from Finland all sharing the same same!
Just Silently Screaming
The 7" single 'Hatstands' released on the independent Pure Motorised Instinct Records label in 1984, I'm guessing a 'self-financed' release with it's awesomely illustrated cover by drummer Dean Ormston.
It seems the band had morphed into being called The Silent Scream after some legal issues with their previous name 'Creatures of Habit', anyway this song was the bands only single, distributed by 'The Cartel' (a small number of independent record labels who set up a co-operative for record distribution).
- The A Side - Hatstands
- The AA Side - Jagged Path
You can have a listen to the AA side at the above link. I'll be brutally honest I think I like the AA side more, starts of a bit slower but ups the tempo at about 2:12 into the track, sounding a wee bit really early U2 on keyboards and guitar (at least to me).
The recording studio used was 'Woodlands Studios' where bands such as Chumbawumba recorded much of their material.
The Band Were
- Bass – Gary Bower
- Drums – Dean Ormston
- Engineer – Neil Ferguson
- Guitar – Liam Stewart
- Keyboards – David Horne
- Vocals – Anton
It appears Liam Stewart the guitarist appeared on several compilation albums following The Silent Scream. He later took a break from the music business until 2010 when he released his first solo album 'Sixteen Words' you can catch the track listing at the link.

Comic Books & Party Day
Dean Ormston is primarily a comic book artist (the cover of the band's single was created by him), he graduated in the mid '80's and played with bands such as The Silent Scream. He went on to form band The Black Lamps along with other members of bands such as The Danse Society and Party Day.
Neil Ferguson the engineer for this track was also engineer for Chumbawumba's debut release and has been part of the band since 1985 he was also quite unbelievably involved in Black Lace's song 'Agadoo'!🤯
