A Primary Industry
In contrast to previous Goth style related posts, here is a band from my neck of the woods with a different style altogether and a sound that in their early days would have been hard to pigeon-hole...
Band, Early Releases & Name Change
They were a London/Essex band that started as A Primary Industry and later changed their name to Ultramarine in 1989, the track featured here in the youtube video is 'Cicatrice' and is from the album by them called, oddly enough 'Ultramarine'! and was released in 1986 on the Sweatbox label.
The track was actually released a year earlier on the 7" single called '7 Hertz' released on the the same label.
The band as A Primary Industry were a bit of a mix of sounds from post punk, experimental, Electronic to Indie Rock, hard to pigeon hole.
They were:
- Ian Cooper - Guitar
- Paul Hammond - Bass
- Jemma Mellerio - vocals and clarinet
- Guy Waddilove - trumpet and percussion
Ian and Paul met when they were 16 and were both in separate local Essex bands at the time.
Debut
Their debut 7" called 'At Gunpoint' was originally released in 1984 (and dare I say it sounding a little bit 'Pigbag'?) really quite fast, furious and funky. It was released on the LTM Record label which was initially started in Edingurgh in 1983 and had bands like Section 25, Crispy Ambulance and The Happy Family on the label.
Influences & Tours
It appears the boys were influenced by Factory Records and bands such as Cabaret Votaire, Dif Juz and 23 Skiddoo to name a few
Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond changed the band name to Ultramarine in 1989 and they had the pleasure of touring with other bands such as Orbital and supported Björk on her US Tour.
Catch this one on youtube: British Summertime from the B Side of the single 'Weird Gear' released on the Brainiak Record label in 1991.
They are still kicking around and performed a gig at The Black Tower Sound System in November this year. Have a check out of Black Tower Projects at the link.
