Easter, Set Me Free Alt Rock Style

Easter Alt Rock Style

Well, not exactly an Easter song, but as Easter time is almost upon us...this is taken from the 1978 album by the Patti Smith Group called 'Easter'

Patti Smith Group, Easter

This is one of the tracks from it, 'Privilege (Set Me Free)', this track and the more obviously likely to be a hit 'Because The Night', originally penned by Bruce Springsteen were both released as singles. The latter being by far the more commercially successful reaching #5 in the UK Singles Chart.

60's Films And Paul Jones

The song 'Privilege (Free Me)' had been originally written for the 1967 film, oddly enough called 'Privilege', starring Paul Jones (vocalist with Manfred Mann) and Jean Shrimpton (60's Model and Actress). The film was written (original story) by Johnny Speight a British television and film scriptwriter, (mostly comedy), writing for Morecambe & Wise, Peter Sellers and television comedies such as 'Til Death Do Us Part.

Morcambe&Wise

The film itself is set in the future and focuses on Paul Jones who is a pop star who attains almost god-like status, but is actually a 'puppet' for a manipulative government and ends up despising the adulation he receives. The film location was set in and around Birmingham and included Birmingham City's Stadium.

The original version of the song was sung by Paul Jones and written by Mel London and Mike Leander, the latter being a big name in music in the 60's and 70's. The original version is here:

Groping 60's Style & Paul Sings The Blues

Also have a look at the lovely Paul...being groped! on stage in the 60's😮, to be honest I don't know how he managed to keep singing so professionally bless him...

...The indignity you have to put up with for the price of fame!😂 From 1965 'Come Tomorrow' by Manfred Mann!

And just to show his diverse singing style and harmonica playing (no groping this time), with The Blues Band...

From BBC T.V. 'Friday Night....Saturday Morning'  A Blues-tastic number from 1979 with an old Little Walter blues classic originally released in 1957, (catch the original at the link), called 'Boom, Boom, Out Go the Lights', an awesome blues favourite of mine, just showing you that Paul Jones ain't just about having his leg stroked! Both versions are really quite awesome, I love a bit of blues especially harmonica playing as above, it always gets my feet tapping!👣

And Just Because...

And back to Patti Smith, just because it would be rude not to put it here, the more popular and successful single from the Patti Smith Group, 'Because The Night'. Purely because it is awesome!😉 Here below recorded on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test'...

The Track List For The Album is at the link at Discogs.com and includes a song that would later give a band a name... Ghost Dance. Check out my previous post at the link

What If?

I wonder if Bruce Springsteen had kept and sung it himself, do you think it would have resonated so well? who knows? All I know is that Mr Springsteen is an excellent songwriter/lyricist and I think Patti Smith did this song some real justice, good on both of 'em! 😉
