Yes in the UK on 5th November it is 'Fireworks Night' preceded also by Diwali celebrations which kicked off on 24th October which also involves a bit of a 'firework-fest'. I have a small feeling with the current economic situation here that local councils may be spending out on as many organized firework displays and also generally most people may 'tone it down' as it just costs too much, if not I gotta go out and buy a set of doggie earmuffs! 🎧Anyway, as well as 'Fireworks Night' I thought I could slip in an Independent Label post with a....

...US Garage Rock style band from Texas called Fireworks, they were fairly short lived forming in 1993 and by 1997 had split.

The Band Were

  • Chris Merlick - Guitar
  • Darin Lin Wood - Guitar/Vocals
  • James Arthur - Guitar
  • Janet Walker - Drums
  • Keith Underwood - Guitar

Evidently several of the band members left and re-joined at different times (probably why there appears to be so many guitarists!)

Set The World On Fire

Catch their full album at the link Set The World On Fire. (the recording is a little 'rough around the edges but still a good snapshot of their sound). The album was released in 1993 on the Independent Crypt Records, a label founded by Tim Warren in 1983 and releasing for other garage rock style bands such as Thee Mighty Caesars.

They remind me a little bit of a favourite band of mine The Cramps. You can get their track 'I Was A Teenage Werewolf' on youtube at the link (with a really cool video to accompany it!). Ok, so the track by The Cramps is a little slower, but just love that whole Garage Rock/Psychobilly sound, possibly the whole fuzz guitar thing you get from them with tracks such as 'Human Fly' idk? I suspect I will be blogging more about them in later posts on this site....watch this space! Fireworks are also in a similar vein to another Garage Rock band featured on this site called 'The Vibes' have a check in on their sound at the link.

Catch the track 'She's A Tornado' which was released in 1994 on the 'In The Red Recordings' label which is a label featured on this site before on the post The Hunches - Stateside Garage Rock, check it out at the link and also for other Garage Rock style sounds on this website go to the Garage Rock tag.

...And For A Little History

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed assassination attempt against King James VI by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby who sought to restore the Catholic monarchy to England after decades of persecution against Catholics.

Spawning later nursery rhymes:

"Remember, remember, the Fifth of November, Gunpowder treason and plot I see no reason why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot".
