Gathering Dust
Gathering Dust.

This song released on the 4AD Record label in November 1980 as AD6.
Modern English were formed in 1977 in Colchester, Essex. Originally they were part of the Punk scene and called The Lepers, but they eventually changed their name, their first single 'Drowning Man' was released on their own 'Limp Records' label in 1979.
By the time they had released 'Gathering Dust' they had signed to 4AD. Within the same month of the release of this single the band recorded their first John Peel Session which was transmitted on 25th November 1980, they did a further 'Peel Session' in 1981.
Their first album also released on 4AD was 'Mesh & Lace' in 1981 and featured this single.
In their early days they appear to have been influenced by bands such as Joy Division, later adopting the more keyboard driven sound of other bands of the day such as Duran Duran or Simple Minds, but never perhaps fully achieving the success of those bands.

Possibly their most well known song was 'I Melt With You' released in October 1982 which, although the band's profile was fairly low-key in the UK, Sire Records in the States licensed it, making it a much bigger song for them on radio, clubs and was even used in the 1983 film 'Valley Girl'. How could I not put that on here too....
