Jools In The Rough

Early Jools

Jools Holland and one of his early session piano performances was playing Boogie Woogie on the Wayne/Jayne County song ‘F*ck Off’ from the E.P. ‘Blatantly Offenzive’.

The band originally being known as Wayne County and The Electric Chairs. The E.P. was released in the U.K. on the Safari Record label in 1978, it was first released as just a 7" single on the Sweet FA Label a year earlier in 1977.

Jools With Squeeze

He also played similar style piano for Squeeze, this track being ‘Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)’ released in 1980. The song kind of sums up the ‘bog standard’ British Holiday of yesteryear in places like Camber Sands, or worse…

Funland

Maybe ‘Fun’ is over-egging it a bit?

…with the ’holiday is complete’ lyric referencing a lad ‘copping off’ behind a chalet with a lass. Have a ‘bang’ (s’cuse the pun!) at the Urban Dictionary definition of the song title Urban Dictionary and also check out the song lyrics in general as they are really quite clever thanks to the song writing skills of Messrs Difford and Tilbrook at Genius Lyrics

Jools Solo

He quit Squeeze in 1981 to pursue a solo career and in his time has worked with some well known artists including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Sting, David Gilmour and Bono to name a few.

Jools on T.V.

As well as being a very talented musician he also hosted Channel 4’s ‘The Tube’ with Paula Yates and managed to get the show pulled for a number of weeks after using the phrase “groovy fuckers” in a live early evening trailer for the show. More information at: http://www.themortonreport.com, evidently he was also a naughty boy at school and was expelled for trashing a teacher’s car.

He appeared in T.V. shows such as The Young Ones, as Filthy Rich and Catflap, French and Saunders as well as, since 1992 presenting his own show ‘Later…with Jools Holland’ and since 1993 the annual ‘Hootenanny’ achieving an O.B.E. in 2003.
