Money Talk, Power Pop Sheffield Style

The Band, Power Pop/Mod Revival

The Negatives were the band

The Negatives, Money Talk

Money Talk 💷...The B Side to 'Electric Waltz' released on Sheffield based Independent Label, Aardvark Records with the Catalogue No. STEAL 1 in 1980.

Influences

The band were a power pop/mod influenced band (you can kind of catch hints of The Jam and other revival bands such as The Chords or Secret Affair in there). They appeared on a compilation and released this one and only single. I guess the Jam would have been the band that led the way for a lot of the up and coming revival bands of the day, their sharper, smarter look (hair not the colour of baked beans), but music delivered in a style (certainly early on) of an underlying aggression and anger. I guess that is why they were liked by Punks as well as Mods?

Revival, Other Acts & Seaside Mayhem

The revival scene was fairly short lived, but helped along the way by films such as Quadrophenia released in 1979,  there were plenty of bands appearing on the scene, some of them involved are featured on this site, namely The Little Roosters, Nine Below Zero and The Inmates. I guess there was also some crossover of R&B/Pub Rock with the revival bands as well!

Scooters, Mod Revival

Certainly remember the whole revival scene well, as every Bank Holiday Monday the roads in Essex suddenly became awash with scooters, all heading down to Southend or Clacton for some seaside mayhem.

Who Are You?

The Band Lineup was:
  • Brad Martini - Bass & Backing Vocals
  • Steve Wilmot - Drums & Backing Vocals
  • Pete Eason - Vocals
  • Fraser 'Snapper' Charles - Guitar/Piano

Two Bands, Same Name?

They managed to be played on the radio on the John Peel show with them and another band he was going to play having the same name, 'Peely' does identify that this band are on the 'Aardvark Records Label'. The other band were possibly The Negatives a punk band from Bradford kicking around at the same kind of time (more on them at: boredteenagers.co.uk).

Can't Explain, But...

To be brutally honest I just think I prefer the 'B' side, purely because it sounds more punchy, but I guess that may be up to you, have a listen to 'em both and make your own mind up.

Further Info

Some interesting information on them on: SheffieldHistory.co.uk including playing on a 'ledge' outside a Record Shop in Sheffield, hey! Have a read for yourselves😉

Evidently they are also featured in a book which you can buy at most good book stores and online called 'Our Generation: The Punk and Mod Children of Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster 1975 - 1985', by Tony Beesley.
