My Baby Does Good Sculptures

(My Baby) Does Good Sculptures

They started off as 'The Knutsford Dominators'  in 1975, when both Jo Callis and Alan Forbes were Edinburgh art students. They originally played '50's and 60's covers, eventually deciding to take things a little more 'seriously' and in 1976 formed The Rezillos actually named after a nightclub featured in a 1973 DC comic which was called 'Revilos' (the band would later change their name to The Revillos in '79).

Think this particular video is age restricted, it is well put together though, so visit it on youtube here: (My Baby) Does Good Sculptures, The Rezillos 1977

They kind of had a similar style to that of acts such as The B52's and The Cramps incorporating B Movie style imagery and garage rock with 50's and 60's style sound and taking a more lighthearted approach than some of the other punk acts of the day, but still containing the same punk edge and manic stage presence.

With the usual punk style they all decided to give themselves stage names, Jo Callis becoming 'Luke Warm', Alan Forbes changing to 'Eugene Reynolds', Dave Sinclair Harris becoming 'Hi-Fi Harris' , Dave Smythe changing to 'Dr. D.K. Smythe', Alistair Donaldson as 'William Mysterious' plus also when they started out they recruited two design students Sheilagh Hynd and Gail Jamieson who became 'Faye Fife' and 'Gail Warning'.

They originally released their first single 'Can't Stand My Baby' on the independent Sensible Songs Record label, but were soon courted by the American Sire Records label who had artists such as Talking Heads on their books.
Here they are on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1978...

This particular song didn't do so well in the UK Charts in the day, it wasn't until the release of their album 'Can't Stand The Rezillos' and release of  the single 'Top Of The Pops' that the band started to hit the big time,by that time several of the members had left turning an 8 piece band down to a 5 piece unit.

Jo Callis would himself eventually leave to join The Human League and co-write some of their biggest hits including 'Don't You Want Me Baby'.
