Pay No More Than 99p
Pay No More Than 99p
This brings back memories. I remember buying a compilation album released by Cherry Red Records called 'Pillows & Prayers'. It was a collection of artists work on that record label from '82 - '84. It was released towards the end of 1982 and I seem to vaguely remember purchasing it around 1983. It was cheap (which was a big plus), in fact had a 'Pay No More Than 99p' sticker on it and was it a picture disc protected by a plastic cover. I still have it at home tucked away safely.
You can check out the full Pillows & Prayers track listing on discogs at the link.
Felt & Other Artists
There were, as an 'uninitiated' punter to Cherry Red quite a selection of artists I hadn't heard before at the time. It did open my eyes to artists such as Ben Watt, Five or Six, The Monochrome Set, Eyeless in Gaza and this band....Felt with 'My Face Is On Fire'. It still stands out as one of my favourites of that album.

Released as a 7" single in 1982 on the label. The B Side being 'Trails Of Colour Dissolve', it only featured Lawrence on guitar and Gary Ainge on Drums but is awesome.
Photographs As Memories
Here is another favourite by band Eyeless In Gaza, the track 'No Noise' was released as the last track on the 1980 album by the band called 'Photographs As Memories', but included in 'Pillows' compilation.
And this track by post-punk band Five Or Six called 'Portrait'

The band were signed by the Head of Cherry Red Records Mike Alway. The band were fairly fluid but all seemed to go on to bigger things. John Yorke as Senior Executive at Channel 4 and BBC, Dave Harper going on to manage bands such as Goldfrapp and his brother Simon going on to head up 4AD Records.
A Bang & A Wimpy?
And as for this fella...Punk Poet and multi instrumentalist Atilla The Stockbroker (John Baine) with 'A Bang & A Wimpy' evidently a song about being threatened in hamburger bars! also featured on the album as well. This original track was also released on the 1983 album 'Ranting At The Nation' also released by Cherry Red. I got to see him at the Pink Toothbrush Alt Nightclub in 1984 where he performed this.
