Goth Endings & Doom Dance Pop Beginnings
So, a friend got me into this band, he was a massive Bauhaus fan and when they split he found a new love in Tones On Tail. I have to say they were a bit of a departure from the goth-rock style of Bauhaus and I guess it took some getting used to but they really were very good. Their whole style was a bit hard to pigeon-hole from more up tempo dance beats and electronic sounds to down tempo leftfield, experimental and quite psychedelic at times, either way it really was different sound.
The End Of A Goth Era & New Beginnings
The end of Bauhaus meant a new beginning for Pete Murphy who would forge an alliance with Mick Karn from the band Japan and form Dali's Car.

They were to release one album 'The Waking Hour' released on their own 'Paradox' record label in 1984. It was another album my friend brought. I have to say I tried, but I never really got into the whole sound, it just kind of didn't work for me, not to say it was bad though and both musicians in their own right were top class. They were to go back to the studio again in the latter part of 2010, but sadly by 2011 Mick Karn sadly lost the battle against Cancer. It's a huge shame, Pete went on as a solo artist and has also performed again with Bauhaus.
And Doom & Dance Pop Was Born
Whilst Peter Murphy was doing his own thing Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins also moved on to other projects. The track 'Lions' was released by Tones On Tail on the Beggars Banquet Label in 1984. The B Side 'Go' being a bigger hit for them.
Record Art & Band
They released their eponymous 12" in 1982 on the Independent '4AD' Records Label, the listing for the tracks is:
- A Bigger Splash
- Copper
- Means Of Escape
- Instrumental
Catch the two links above for the contrast again from the cool bassline and lovely acoustic guitar work to the funky bassline, but much heavier and darker track Means Of Escape. I have to say all the tracks appealed to me.

- Daniel Ash
- Glen Campling
- Kevin Haskins
