Goth Endings & Doom Dance Pop Beginnings

So, a friend got me into this band, he was a massive Bauhaus fan and when they split he found a new love in Tones On Tail. I have to say they were a bit of a departure from the goth-rock style of Bauhaus and I guess it took some getting used to but they really were very good. Their whole style was a bit hard to pigeon-hole from more up tempo dance beats and electronic sounds to down tempo leftfield, experimental and quite psychedelic at times, either way it really was different sound.

The End Of A Goth Era & New Beginnings

The end of Bauhaus meant a new beginning for Pete Murphy who would forge an alliance with Mick Karn from the band Japan and form Dali's Car.

They were to release one album 'The Waking Hour' released on their own 'Paradox' record label in 1984. It was another album my friend brought. I have to say I tried, but I never really got into the whole sound, it just kind of didn't work for me, not to say it was bad though and both musicians in their own right were top class. They were to go back to the studio again in the latter part of 2010, but sadly by 2011 Mick Karn sadly lost the battle against Cancer. It's a huge shame, Pete went on as a solo artist and has also performed again with Bauhaus.

And Doom & Dance Pop Was Born

Whilst Peter Murphy was doing his own thing Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins also moved on to other projects. The track 'Lions' was released by Tones On Tail on the Beggars Banquet Label in 1984. The B Side 'Go' being a bigger hit for them.

It was originally released on the 'Beggars' label as both a 7" and 12" in both the usual black and also Translucent Red.

'Now We Lustre'/'There's Only One' has a similar style bass line to something from P.i.L.'s Jah Wobble to start but with a fast funky guitar and drum machine tapping away. Certainly felt a world away from Bauhaus. Just to illustrate the differences of sound Tones On Tail produced listen to the track 'Rain', it's pretty ethereal, the synth almost sounding like the steady fall of raindrops. They were described by one journalist as 'Doom and Dance Pop Side Project'.

Record Art & Band

They released their eponymous 12" in 1982 on the Independent '4AD' Records Label, the listing for the tracks is:

Catch the two links above for the contrast again from the cool bassline and lovely acoustic guitar work to the funky bassline, but much heavier and darker track Means Of Escape.  I have to say all the tracks appealed to me.

The record cover art work is stunning (at least to me!) I can see two images, that of a ghostly figure or that of a face, designed of course by Daniel Ash who also designed many of the Bauhaus record covers (clever boy!).

As a band they were fairly short-lived forming in 1982 and disbanding in 1984, they produced one album 'Pop' and seven Singles/EP's. Their final single 'Christian Says' released in November '84. They seemed to flit between Beggars Banquet, 4AD and Situation Two for all of their single and E.P. releases.

The band were:
  • Daniel Ash
  • Glen Campling
  • Kevin Haskins

Both Ash and Haskins were in Bauhaus and Campling was the band's Roadie. After they split both Kevin Haskins and Daniel Ash were both to go on to perform in Love & Rockets along with original Bauhaus Bass player David J who had been working with The Jazz Butcher, catch a load of them on this site at the link.

Catch the slightly quirky psychedelic 'No New Tale To Tell' with the cool guitar riff from Daniel Ash from the 1987 album 'Earth, Sun and Moon'. Nice Video!
