Streams Of Whiskey 🥃

Something dear to my heart alcoholically 🥃 and musically 🎵, especially over the Christmas period, something that gets played in chez AKickIndieNutz whist sorting Christmas Dinner, songs that just lift the spirits (don't offend the old 'uns too much as long as they don't listen too carefully to some of the lyrics!). Just to get into the festive 'spirit'.....

Catch them on 'The Session' with the track Streams Of Whiskey recorded in 1987 with guests Joe Strummer and The Dubliners, featuring a version of the Clash classic 'London Calling'.

And get the original single version at the youtube link 'Streams Of Whiskey'.

I guess as it is Christmas I could have chosen the more remembered 'Fairy Tale Of New York' with the wonderful late and great Kirsty MacColl, but I thought that might just be too predictable!

Red Roses For Me Album Track List 🌹

A couple of tracks at the links above which give you the idea of their sound, I didn't know myself that a 'Dargle' is actually a day excursion or day out, we live and learn! Pretty much the whole album ranges from traditional Irish folk sounds in an either instrumental form or in the case of Streams Of Whiskey and Waxie's Dargle a kind of 'Celtic Shouty Punk Style', a fusion that clearly paid dividends for them. Lyrically The Dark Streets Of London fits in so neatly with Christmas...

"Now the winter comes down,

I can't stand the chill,

That comes to the streets around Christmas time,

And I'm buggered to damnation,

And I haven't got a penny,

To wander the dark streets of London"

Formation & Beginnings 🐣

In 1982, James Fearnley (accordion), who had been a guitarist with The Nips, joined Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy, and Jem Finer, forming the band, then known as Pogue Mahone.

The new group played their first gig at The Pindar of Wakefield (aka The Water Rats as featured in my previous post  Dead Beats & Kings Cross Indie 80's) on 4 October 1982. They then appeared at Gossips in Dean Street Soho on Thursday 3 November 1983 with Trash Trash Trash and The Stingrays.

Kiss My Arse! 😘

They later added Cait O'Riordan (bass) and Andrew Ranken (drums). The band played London pubs and clubs, and released a single, "Dark Streets of London", on their own, self-named label, gaining a small reputation especially for their live performances.
They came to the attention of the media and Stiff Records when they opened for The Clash on their 1984 tour. Shortening their name to "The Pogues" (partly due to BBC censorship following complaints from Gaelic speakers in Scotland) as Pogue Mahone evidently in Gaelic translates to 'Kiss My Arse'. They released their first album Red Roses for Me on Stiff Records that October.

Purely because I just can't stop myself and also for another of my favourite tracks by them Sally MacLennane from The Old Grey Whistle Test. Leading neatly on to...

Fiesta! 🥳

Another of my favourites, a bit of a change in style for the Pogues perhaps, but still the same anarchic upbeat 'Celtic' twang of pure madness all encapsulated in a feelgood Spanish Fiesta style mix. Completely Loco!🤪

Previous Bands

The Radiators From Space.

The band formed in 1976 in Dublin, and consisted of Philip Chevron, Pete Holidai, Steve Rapid (Steve Averill), Jimmy Crashe and Mark Megaray. They were one of the earliest punk rock bands. They signed to Chiswick Records and released the album TV Tube Heart in 1977. Their first single "Television Screen" was the first and only punk record to make the Irish top 20

Steve Averill, graphic artist and his company AMP is also known for designing all U2's album covers, whilst Phil Chevron who sadly passed away in 2013 was best known for being guitarist for the Pogues and also a record producer.

The Nips

Shane McGowan's (known at the time as 'Shane O'Hooligan') with his first band, the Nips...

The track 'All The Time In The World'

Originally released in 1978 on the Independent Soho Records Label a label that would also release sounds by bands such as The Passions and The Inmates.
